Follow the haunting cry of the African Fish Eagle
on 4-wheel bikes, accompanied by an experienced
guide, or explore the endless beaches, towering
sand dunes, Limpopo flood plain, surrounding forests,
all with abundant bird life and unique ecosystems.
Zongoene Lodge opened in September 1997 and
has already been accepted as a member of the
Leading Independent Hotels of Southern Africa,
which is a good indication of the standards
to be expected. We can therefore be assured
that as guests visiting Zongoene you will enjoy
superb service, outstanding cuisine and a memorable
visit.
This truly unique Lodge is built on the edge
of the Limpopo River at the estuary where it
flows into the Indian Ocean, allowing us to
utilise both the river and the sea for fishing.
Zongoene Lodge is built out of wood felled,
cut and crafted on site by master woodcutters
and carvers. As much of the building materials
as possible were soured in Mozambique and
More than 300 unskilled labourers were trained
to craft and create this magnificent Lodge.
Activities at Zongoene include the very popular
four-wheel bike trials. Guests go on a 3 hour
trail with a trail guide through indigenous
forests, exploring 100ft sand dunes, visiting
a 100yr old lighthouse and following an ancient
path through a coastal forest rich of flora
and fauna. The bird watching in this area is
outstanding. Enjoy a birds-eye view of the area
in a micro light with an experienced pilot (seasonal).
Deep-sea fishing boats are also available with
a skipper and gillie - in addition fishing equipment
is available for hire should it be required.
Snorkelling trips are arranged with the four-wheel
bike's guide, who will escort guests on a snorkelling
or bike trip. Row along the scenic Limpopo River
in your own canoe and enjoy a leisurely outing
absorbing the tranquillity of your surroundings.
For some serious relaxing the Lodge does have
a large pool and outside bar - alternatively
guests can be ferried across the Limpopo River
to there own private beach and be collected
at a time required by them.
